This post has been sitting in the back
burner for a while wondering if I should even post it. I
opened the March maybe February issue of Vanity Fair and there was
an advertisement with the "The Kills." (Big fan) Since
I love to listen to music, and due to my background in film production, I play
close attention to music videos and the story they visually and aesthetically portray. But this is a magazine ad? With musicians advertising
clothes? So I googled it and lo-and-behold Alison Nicole Mosshart, lead singer of
The Kills pictured above, is a singer-songwriter AND an occasional model. Wow,
right?!

Her music videos have now become fashion venues. I’m sure you’ve noticed too fashion venues, across
the board, have now become (and are) music videos. Yes, I know in realizing this now, I’m certifying myself as fashion ignorant. Please
excuse my lack of knowledge on the subject.
I’m learning though. Now I know that this mutual influence has
existed for decades. Like I said, I saw
the ad in my Vanity Fair BUT on the same day, I got an email promo for a fashion
exhibit currently running at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in NYC (through
august). This exhibit, according to the website , speaks to the effect
of how the punk aesthetic has continued to appear in fashion since its

My family and I went to the Alexander McQueen: Savage Beauty Exhibit in 2011 and it was remarkable! My oldest daughter who is only 9 still speaks about it today. I highly recommend watching this "Punk: Chaos to Couture" MET video. Its as good as it gets to actually going to the exhibit.

Ok, so why am I making such a big deal about this mutual influence and writing about this?

The thing is, this realization is celebratory to me. Though the advertisement
in Vanity Fair is for “Equipment” designer wear that offers $200 white

Yes. $200.

This aspect of
fashion design is one I can understand. It’s
not a superior, inaccessible, red-carpet, other-worldliness-perfection. It is fashion design based on individuality, self-expression
and personal style.

That I can relate
to. Just like music. A bit of life experiences, personal culture, and
personality goes into each song-writers lyrics and each musicians notes. I can see the same thing in this form of
fashion design. Just like fashion designer
Marc Jacobs says in this MET
video, it’s a “substance” found in fashion. Which is lacking in any other fashion
arena, in my humble opinion. Its substance and relevancy that makes a good song.
The same also goes for fashion.

Now, all this does not go without me noticing the fact that
this ‘crisscrossing of influences’ is only brought upon by commercialism at its
best. It’s the “Mainstream” free commerce once again, like in the music
industry, gnawing at the bone of originality for that meaty financial gain. But, I’m not scared. I’m not shying way. I’m also NOT going to buy a $200 white
t-shirt just merely for self expression. That has to be a really good shirt
that can last for an eternity for me to consider spending that much.

Oh, wait. It’s made
of silk. Ok. Then, maybe.

"Royals" by Lorde

Can you believe that Lorde is only 16 years old? She is from New Zealand and makes quite a presence.

What this girl's future has in store can only be continued success? Trendy, great voice, talented songwriting and an ear for catchy sounds. Wow! I foresee a few magazine spreads and designer collaborations on top of her musical endeavor.
If you want to know more about her you can see an interview here. I certainly will be keeping an ear/eye out for her in the future.
Here is a new-to-me song that is a perfect addition to that hippy ensemble you may have decided to wear today. It's Icelandic pop glory. Sweet, trip-inducing melodies. Echo-y lyrics.

I found this to be a great inspirational story which I had to share with you. Ian Ruhter is a large scale, wet-plate photographer. Wet-plate photography is a medium that is not commonly used since the invention of film. For anyone to be photographing this way, especially in the age of digital photography, I consider to be a very brave act.

In essence, this is a story of overcoming adversity.

You'll find in this video great stories highlighting personal successes.
There are also themes of inhibited creativity, found expression, doubt and the inevitable fear of failure. All emotions that always seems to accompany a solitary journey like the one Ian is taking. I am sure you will find it as compelling as I did. Especially if you like photography, stories of artistic expression, want an inspirational follow-your-dream story or just a little creative silver-lining to your day.
INSPIRATION

This week I am in Southern Cali for spring break with the hub and kids. We stayed in Huntington Beach where the "Surfer" life reigns supreme. As a teenager (80's and 90's) I did not visit SoCal half as much as I wanted to. I loved anything surfer or skater then. I would have killed to be in Huntington Beach for a day.
So, flash forward, two kids, a husband and a butt load of responsibilities. The visit here is now a tour destination to keep the family entertained. With parent vision, this place is filled with tourist traps, expensive gift shops and crappy souvenirs. The surfers and skate boarders now seem marginal to me. That cute skater boy I would swoon over as a teenager, now seems kinda stinky and unkept. I also wonder what his career prospects are.

"Does your mom know you're here?"

Geez, I hope my daughters prefer boys in the debate team. At least they look kept.

Anyhow, this film seems appropriate with our visit to Huntington. Its a video created and directed by Brett Novak. Who is a genius! When I first saw this skate film, it was obvious it is, really, (what i'll call) a upscale skate video. Similar to what a luxury car promotion would be. You know... those video promotions you see online or in the showroom. He is able to give skate boarding a luxurious feeling. Skate boarding is a sport that has been recorded by every 8th grader out there since 1983. Its done and redone. And if you've seen one skate video, you've kinda seem them all. Until Brett came around.

I watch this and my mind flashes back to teenager mode. I forget my current adult responsibilities! This film is TOTALLY a version of what my hormone prone teenage brain registered when observing a skate-boarder a work.
Easy music with slow deliberate movements.

Watch it and you'll see what I mean.

Here another one as a bonus. Enjoy!
MUSIC

I love, love music videos that actual tell a story. I know most do, but what draws me to this one is its stylised and periodic emphasis. Maybe it took place in the 70's or early 80's. Or yesterday.

The couple is obviously affluent and you quickly find yourself unable to associate to them, yet the piano riffs and catchy lyrics draw you in. "Good times are coming...TO AN END!"
We are all weary of what the future brings. Especially when we love. Here is a very dramatic interpretation.

I offer my first song CURE for 2013. I continue to hope I can enhance your day with my musical choices, if only for at least a few minutes . You can expect many, many more of my "cure for the day" posts this year. If you like them (or not) let me know. I do want to hear your opinions on how I can make this blog better.

.
I want to enhance my blog, at least to get it to some proximity of what I imagine it to be.

I HAVE to share with you the song by the Divine Fits that I am currently very obsessed with. I have played this song over 50 times and have yet to grow tired of it. This is ALWAYS a good sign.
Some of the peeps from El Paso had a chance to see them live this past November. If you went, PLEASE let me know what you thought of them in concert.

Since I am so infatuated with this song, I had to look into the band members. The members of the band are veterans to the music scene. With previous successes in bands and solo careers. I won't get into detail. But if want to know more, follow the link here.

I hope I can have an opportunity to see them live. They need to swing past Houston after their trips to Austin.
LYRICS:

My Love is Real

I was stuck on a pin and we were equally nervous,
I could not get through.
So where is the chain that will keep us together
This much is true
My Love is real
Until it stops

Don’t you wanna go down
like old Mayakovsky,
in a sea of blue.
And if I was the king,
she’s the knife in the water
There’s so much to loose
When my love is real.
Until it stops

So throw up your hands for south California,
and not a lot to loose
I would not sleep until I tried every way
to bring your little black heart back
Love is real
Until it stops musings in my lifehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13352327465478449177noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8342511030503030263.post-58629501092454098402013-01-24T17:14:00.001-06:002015-07-03T16:47:38.476-05:00CURE FOR THE DAY: INSPIRATION Fares Fares in "Sleepwalking in the Rift"

I think I'm smitten.

This actor first caught my eye in a music video by band Lykke Li. He was alluring and soul stirring in this video though he didn't say a word during the whole thing. This is not an easy portrayal. But, for me this was enough to embed his image into memory. Recently, I caught a trailer of the movie "Zero Dark Thirty" and I spotted him in it somewhere in the background. Which now makes that movie even more interesting and a must see. I have GOT to see it.
Movie roles like this also tell me that he is capturing the attention of USA casting directors. So I wouldn't be surprised we see more of him in the future.

I should say his name, right?? It's Fares Fares. He's a Swedish actor. He's so alluring and represents the type of leading man I feel is missing in American movies today. A non-chalant, tall, dark and handsome man. And alluring. Have I said he's alluring??

He stars in a short film sponsored by Maiyet (clothing company) and directed by Cary Fukunaga (Jane Eyre, Sin Nombre) and also a stunning individual himself.

Watch Sleeping walking in the Rift. Tell me if maybe you see what I see. If you don't, just patronize me and nod in agreement.
LYRICS:

I didn't sleep at all
But on a day like this
I don't need sleep
I didn't eat at all
But with people like this
I don't have to eat

I'm surfing on endorphins
I hit a really big wave
Oh it's such a shiny day
The kind of day you want to save

There is no wrong at all
Everything is perfect
as it is
And I can twist it all
Change the speed of time
with a single kiss

I'm surfing on endorphins
I hit a really big wave
Oh it's such a shiny day
The kind of day you want to save

I'm shooting up sunshine
I'm shooting up sunshine
I'm shooting up sunshine
I'm shooting up sunshine

I'm surfing on endorphins
I hit a really big wave
Oh it's such a shiny day
The kind of day you want to save

I'm surfing on endorphins
I hit a really big wave
Oh it's such a shiny day
The kind of day you want to save

MUSIC

These two songs by Muse complement each other both in lyric and music video content. Just like my husband and I complement each other. LOL. They are, however, good examples on how my husband and I feel about man on earth.

The first loud, killer robot, and in-your-face video is my husband’s scientific (or Sci-Fi) take. This song is based on the 2nd Law of thermal dynamics, which, in my laymen’s terms is summarized as ‘how we cannot continue running our lives, as we are, thinking we will evolve into a super-human species without affecting and destroying the life around us.’

The second quieter, pending-doom video describes my take on the matter. Man will not change. The end is coming, look what you’ve done, prepare (kiss your loved ones goodbye) and repent.

My husband loves that the album is named 2nd Law.

We really like Muse. Can you tell?

Enjoy.
Nice remake of a good Bob Dylan

Lyrics:

Artist: Bob Dylan
Don't Think Twice, It's All right

Well It ain't no use to sit and wonder why, babe
If’in you don’t know by now
and it ain't no use to sit and wonder why, babe
it’ll never do somehow.
When your rooster crows at the break of dawn
Look out your winda’ and I'll be gone
You're the reason I'm a-trav'lin' on
but don't think twice, it's all right

And it ain't no use in a-turnin' on your light, babe
the light I never knowed
and it ain't no use in turnin' on your light, babe
I'm on the dark side of the road
but I wish there was somethin' you would do or say
To try and make me change my mind and stay
but We never did too much talkin' anyway
So don't think twice, it's all right

no it ain't no use in callin' out my name, gal
Like you never done before
And it ain't no use in callin' out my name, gal
I can't hear ya any more
I'm a-thinkin' and a-wond'rin' walkin’ down the road
I once loved a woman, a child I'm told
I give her my heart but she wanted my soul
so don't think twice, it's all right

So long, Honey Babe
Where I'm bound, I can't tell
Goodbye is too good a word, babe
So I just say fare thee well
I ain't a-sayin' you treated me unkind
You could have done better but I don't mind
You just kinda wasted my precious time
so don't think twice, it's all right

I am a a germanophile. This is not without a logical reason. A good part of my family, which I am very close to, is German. I also lived and worked in Germany for a time, at which point I entertained living there. Heck, I still wish I could. I haven't convinced the hubby fully. But, I am constantly working on changing his mind.

So, when I say I "heart" Germany don't think I'm walking around the house in Lederhosen, eating Bratwurst and dancing to polkas. This is far from my idea of what Germany is. (Though i do enjoy a good german beer now and again.)

The Germany I know is multi-cultural and multi-faceted. Its both systematic and avant-garde. Its in your face, but serious, methodical and restrained. Seemingly unemotional but very patriotic. Like most european countries Germany is liberal. Especially when compared to the part of the U.S. I grew up in. Experiencing Germany when I was in my twenties, was not only a great adventure, it molded my life.

I found passion in Germany. (Not like that, get your mind out of the gutter) I found a life-long passion there. It was techno (electronic) music. Trance to be exact. I showed up in Frankfurt in 1994 at the pinnacle of the German techno movement. Techno, as it was called then, (electro now) was in full force and the clubs playing this music where packed. In Frankfurt, the club "the Omen" was where you had to be. You can see how insanely popular this club was then---here and here.

My close cousin introduced me to the Omen. She was a regular there at the time. She may not be aware of this, but what she introduced me to was universe altering to me. This effect did not just come from the place itself, but the people (or rather) the "techno culture" that existed.

The Omen was in the heart of Downtown Frankfurt. The building were it was housed was unbecoming from the outside. It looked like an abandoned shopping center. However, the music coming out of it was loud. Loud enough for the muffled music to bounce off buildings and reach blocks away.

My first experience there was amazing. People were lined up outside 70 or more deep. We waited about an hour in the cold to get in. Once in, it was hot. Sweaty hot. And crammed. Wall to wall with people. Squeezing through bodies was the only way to find a clear patch of floor to stand on. I'm sure that many crammed people must have violated a few hundred German fire codes. BUT everyone, I mean, EVERYONE was dancing. Even if you stood still you were rocked and swayed. I had no choice but to dance!

The music was reveling. There was no point in fighting it. I took a glace around at the faces around me. Each was lost in his own world yet all danced in unison to the same rhythm. All eyes were rested at the head of the club. There stood the purveyor of beats, the techno rock star of Frankfurt. One hand on his turn table, another up in the air, complete rapture showing on his face. It was Mr. Sven Väth. This was his techno cathedral and here were all the purest believers congregated in one place.
Pure. Awesomeness.
This was way, way more than my grungy- dressed-Jane's Addiction-loving ears could process. But I was all in.

A few days later, we returned to the club. It must have been during the week because the place was not as full. Showcasing that day was a different DJ. We walked in easily and decided to first go to the bar. The music hadn't started yet and everyone was taking the time to drink and socialize. "There he is," my cousin said as she pointed out a brown-haired, side-burn wearing, "dude" having a beer behind the bar. He was only a few feet away, probably saw my cousin point him out. I thought, must be a friend of hers, another friendly club-goer. Maybe we can get free drinks from her bartender friend I thought. "That's DJ Dag" my cousin said, "He's DJ-ing tonight."

"oh" I said.

I didn't know what these words meant when she said them to me. I was unaware of thier meaning. I didn't know who he was. Or what he had to offer. Much less what this occassion meant. I just went where she took me. I just wanted to have a beer and dance.

Let me tell you. These words and actions have grown in meaning as the years go by. They reverberate in my head in a very different way now. I recall it all so differently.

Something like this.

"That's DJ Dag"

Right. There.
(She's pointing at him..oh my god!)
He is just feet away!

"He's DJ-ing TONIGHT!"

Right Here.
Right now.
Yes, here.
Yes. In the same place where you are.
Yes, Right Now!
YES!
DJ Dag!!
Yes, "The Godfather of Trance. "

Then it was time, he left the bar and got up on stage to start his set. And what a set it was. I was sealed, stamped and certified. Trance disciple ever since.

This was one of the songs I heard that night. It blew my mind!

Trance would not exist if it wasn't for this unassuming guy drinking a beer behind the bar. There would be no Tiesto, Sander van doorn or the many other modern day DJ's he's "inspired." One of his is first albums (in collaboration with Rolf Ellmer) was "Dance to Trance." You young trance lovers, look this up.

So, thats my story. Thanks for taking this trip down memory lane with me. Old Skool. I guess reliving events is what happens when you're approaching 40. EEK! Im journaling it so in case I forget with age. Hopefully I'll be trancing when I'm 90.

BOY - Skin lyrics

All day long she's waiting for the night to ask her out
To be somebody's dancer, to get lost inside a crowd
There‘s no need to talk, because the music is so loud,
Till a taxi drops her back into a morning full of doubts.

You can feel like a part of something if you're part of the scene
You can make your life look pretty out a little ice and gin,
Wash off the make-up and prepare the aspirin
Well you can get out of this party dress but you can't get out of this skin.

His home is where his heart is at the parties that he rolls.
Tells himself he can't be lonely cause he's never on his own,
But all the friends he makes at night, in the morning they are gone,
And he's left with his four walls, his aching head, his silent phone

You can feel like a part of something if you're part of the scene
You can make your life look pretty out a little ice and gin,
Wash off the make-up and prepare the aspirin
Well you can get out of this party dress but you can't get out of this skin.

Hearing your own echos in the empty staircase
And you're walking through your dark apartment looking for a friendly face
Because the polaroid pictures on your fridge won't do
No, the polaroid pictures on your fridge won't do
No, the polaroid pictures on your fridge won't do
No, they won't do

You can feel like a part of something if you're part of the scene
You can make your life look pretty out a little ice and gin
Wash off the make-up and prepare the aspirin
Well you can get out of this party dress but you can't get out of this-

All day long she's waiting for the night to ask her out
To be somebody's dancer, just to pop it in the crowd
But how to move her feet is all she has to think about
Till a taxi drops her back into a morning full of doubts

You can feel like a part of something if you're part of the scene
You can make your life look pretty out a little ice and gin,
Wash off the make-up and prepare the aspirin
Well you can get out of this party dress but you can't get out of
